App Development Cost in Spain for English-Speaking Startups

Rupak Amin

Founder & Lead Engineer, RAITHub

14 min read

A custom web app or PWA MVP in Spain costs roughly €15,000 to €48,000 at the agency rates Clutch lists for Spain, and about €42,000 to €119,000 at Western European senior freelance rates. Both ranges multiply 680 to 1,120 illustrative build hours by published hourly bands. Madrid and Barcelona share 4 working hours with Dhaka in winter and 5 in summer.

This guide is for English-speaking founders in Barcelona and Madrid, including international teams whose working language is English, pricing a first custom product. It splits the number into line items you can challenge, shows where each rate comes from, and says plainly when a Spanish team is the better answer. RAITHub is a software studio in Dhaka, Bangladesh that delivers in English only, so we have an interest in the offshore side of the comparison. Every outside figure is linked so you can check it yourself.

How much does it cost to build a mobile app in Spain?

When founders search for "mobile app development cost", they usually mean something customers use on a phone. There are two ways to build it, and the price gap is large.

  • A web app or progressive web app (PWA). One codebase runs in the phone browser and on desktop. The PWA layer adds a manifest and a service worker, so customers can add it to the home screen, open it full screen and see an offline screen when the connection drops. This is what the ranges in this guide price.
  • Native iOS and Android apps. Separate builds (or one cross-platform build), App Store and Google Play review, device testing and release management on every update. Expect the budget to rise well above the ranges here.

RAITHub builds web applications and PWAs only. It does not build native iOS or Android apps. If an App Store listing is part of your launch, budget for a mobile specialist for that part.

When is a PWA enough for a Spanish startup?

For a first release, more often than not. If your customers sign up, book, pay, upload documents, message you and check status, a PWA covers it. That describes most marketplaces in their first version, B2B tools, booking products, customer portals and internal apps. Push notifications also work on iPhone: WebKit added Web Push for web apps in iOS and iPadOS 16.4, for web apps added to the Home Screen (WebKit: Web Push for web apps on iOS and iPadOS).

Choose native when App Store discovery drives your growth, when the product depends on long-running background work such as continuous location tracking, or when it needs device features the phone browser does not expose. A useful rule for early-stage teams: ship the PWA, watch how people use it, and only then decide. The backend, API, admin area and tests carry over if you add native apps later, so the first build is not thrown away.

What do developers charge per hour in Spain?

Clutch lists an average of US$25 to US$49 an hour for custom software development companies in Spain, the same band it shows for India, the Philippines and Mexico (Clutch software development pricing guide, updated 21 September 2026). Arc's 2026 guide has no Spain row; it lists an average senior freelance rate of US$70 to US$120 an hour for Western Europe, and US$22 to US$55 for South Asia (Arc freelance developer rates 2026).

To convert, this guide uses the European Central Bank reference rate of US$1.1355 per €1 for 30 September 2026 (ECB euro reference rates). Check the day's rate before you compare quotes.

These are market figures checked on 1 October 2026, not RAITHub prices; RAITHub publishes no hourly rate. Two caveats. The Western European band is a regional average that includes higher-cost countries, so a senior freelancer in Barcelona or Madrid may well quote below it. And Clutch's Spain band is built from the agencies listed on Clutch, not from a national survey.

For an official anchor, Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE) puts average gross annual earnings in the information and communication sector at €42,741.94 in 2024, against €29,540.26 across all sectors (INE Wage Structure Survey 2024). That is an employee's salary, before employer social security contributions, equipment, recruitment and management time.

Is it cheaper to outsource from Spain to Bangladesh?

On hourly rate alone, often not by much. That is the honest reading of Clutch's figures: the band it lists for Spanish development companies is the same band it lists as the most common one worldwide. A Spanish agency in that band shares your time zone, your language and your legal system.

So the decision turns on other things. How many hours a vendor needs for the same scope. Whether automated tests are included or billed later. Whether the price is fixed or open. Whether the team has built something like your product before. And whether an English-speaking international team finds it easier to work with an English-only vendor. If a Spanish agency wins on those, hire them. Is it safe to hire a Bangladesh software agency? covers the risks to check, and what developers in Bangladesh cost has the sourced offshore rates.

What are the line items in an app development quote?

A credible quote splits into discovery, design, frontend, backend, payments, access control, the PWA layer, QA, infrastructure and project management. The hours below are illustrative assumptions for a typical first release, such as a booking product, a customer portal or a first-version marketplace. They are not benchmarks and not a quote. Multiplying them by Clutch's Spain band (€22 to €43) and the Western European senior freelance band (€62 to €106) gives the ranges in the opening paragraph.

The same hours at the South Asian freelance band (€19 to €48) land in much the same place as the Spanish agency column. Use the table to question a quote, not to write one. If a quote has no QA line, testing is either hidden or missing; if discovery is zero, nobody has written the spec yet. How to write an MVP spec for an agency helps you get comparable quotes, the MVP cost estimator gives a range for your own scope, and what a US$30k MVP budget buys shows what gets cut when the budget is fixed.

How does Bizum change the scope and the fees?

Bizum is a widely used Spanish mobile payment: its own site reports 31.5 million active users and 120,000 online merchants (Bizum in numbers). If you sell to consumers in Spain, customers will ask for it. The customer enters the phone number registered with Bizum and approves the payment in their banking app (Stripe Bizum docs).

This is engineering guidance. RAITHub has shipped Stripe rent collection in PropDesk, and bKash, Nagad, SSLCommerz and cash on delivery in TheSkinProof, which is the founder's own venture rather than a client project. It has not shipped Bizum or any other Spanish payment method. From Stripe's documentation, the scope should cover:

  • One-off payments only. Stripe lists Bizum as not supporting recurring payments, and not supported in Checkout's subscription mode. A subscription product still needs cards or SEPA Direct Debit for renewals.
  • Payment limits. A minimum charge of €0.50 and a maximum of €5,000, in euros only. Larger B2B invoices need another method.
  • A dispute process. Customers can dispute within 120 calendar days, and you have 40 days to submit evidence. Your order records should hold what Bizum asks for: delivery proof, receipts, the phone number used.
  • Asynchronous refunds. Refunds are possible for up to 395 days and complete asynchronously, so your admin area should show a refund status driven by the webhook, not a "done" message.
  • Onboarding before launch. Stripe keeps the Bizum capability pending until onboarding checks pass, and some business categories are excluded. Request it early so it does not block your launch date.

On fees, Stripe's local payment methods page lists Bizum at 1.5% + €0.25 per successful charge, plus 2% if currency conversion applies (Stripe local payment methods pricing, Spain). Its main pricing page lists the same 1.5% + €0.25 for standard EEA cards, 2.8% + €0.25 for premium EEA cards and 3.15% + €0.25 for international cards (Stripe Spain pricing, checked 1 October 2026). So Bizum is not a way to save fees against a standard card; you add it because your customers prefer it and conversion may improve. On a €60 order, both cost €1.15. The guide to testing payments and webhooks covers the failure cases, such as pending refunds and duplicate events, that every rail needs.

Does using a team in Bangladesh change the GDPR work?

It adds a contract and an assessment, not a separate project. If the offshore team can access personal data, the transfer outside the EU normally relies on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses (SCCs) and a transfer impact assessment. Outsourcing software development for EU startups explains which SCC module to sign, what goes in the annexes and how a small team runs the assessment, so this guide does not repeat it. RAITHub signs DPAs and SCCs and follows your controls; it holds no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification.

The cheaper path is usually architectural: keep production data in an EU region and let the offshore team build and test against synthetic data. This is general information, not legal advice; confirm the current position with your adviser and the Spanish data protection authority, the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (AEPD).

What does an app cost to run after launch?

Plan for hosting, a database, email delivery, error monitoring, payment fees and a maintenance budget for security updates and small changes. For an early product that is usually hundreds of euros a month, not thousands, though payment fees grow with revenue. A PWA skips app store fees and store review on every release. What a SaaS costs to run each month breaks the infrastructure side down line by line.

An invoice from a supplier outside the EU normally carries no Spanish VAT (IVA), and your company may need to account for it under the reverse charge. This is general information, not tax advice; confirm the treatment with your gestor or accountant and the Agencia Tributaria.

How many working hours does a Madrid or Barcelona team share with Dhaka?

Dhaka is UTC+6 with no daylight saving. Mainland Spain runs on CET (UTC+1) in winter and CEST (UTC+2) in summer. With a 9:00 to 18:00 day at both ends, Madrid and Barcelona share about 4 working hours with Dhaka in winter and 5 in summer.

SeasonDhaka ahead byShared window, Madrid timeShared window, Dhaka timeShared hours
Winter (CET)5 hours09:00–13:0014:00–18:004
Summer (CEST)4 hours09:00–14:0013:00–18:005

The shared window is your morning, which suits a Spanish working day with a late lunch: stand-ups and decisions before lunch, and the day's work waiting in a written handoff the next morning. RAITHub agrees the working week with each client, including around national and regional holidays. All delivery, calls and documentation are in English. Spanish or Catalan interface copy is built from text you or your translator supply; RAITHub does not write or review it.

Should a startup in Barcelona or Madrid pay a fixed price or by the hour?

A fixed price once the scope is written down, hourly while it is still being discovered. A fixed price moves the overrun risk to the vendor, which is why discovery comes first and the quote lists its assumptions. Fixed price vs time and materials covers the trade-off, how long an MVP takes gives timelines to check a quote against, and the Singapore cost breakdown uses the same line items if you want to compare markets. There is more for early-stage teams on the startups page.

Why RAITHub for this

  • English-first by design. For an international team in Barcelona or Madrid that already works in English, there is no translation layer between you and the engineers.
  • Fixed written quotes you can check. A free 15-minute technical audit, then a fixed-scope quote with its assumptions listed. See pricing and engagement models.
  • Tests in the price. PropDesk, the property management platform RAITHub built, runs 1,024 automated tests and collects rent through Stripe. BlockEstate, a multi-tenant listing and inquiry platform, reached its MVP in 6 weeks. See the work.
  • PWAs as a real target. PadhAI, the AI tutoring platform RAITHub built, ships as a PWA alongside WhatsApp and Telegram.
  • You own it. Full IP assignment and a standard NDA. First releases run under MVP development.

When you don't need us

  • Your team works in Spanish or Catalan. RAITHub delivers in English only. A Spanish agency in the same Clutch rate band will serve you better.
  • You need a native iOS or Android app. RAITHub builds web apps and PWAs, not native mobile apps.
  • You need Bizum live next month with a vendor who has shipped it. RAITHub has not yet shipped a Spanish payment method; a team that has will be faster.
  • An off-the-shelf tool does 80% of the job. A subscription you can cancel beats a build you must maintain. Try it for a quarter first.
  • You want a developer placed in your team, someone on site in Spain, or a SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certified vendor. RAITHub offers no staff augmentation, has no Spanish office and holds neither certification.

Frequently asked questions

How much does app development cost in Spain?

For a first release of a custom web app or PWA, roughly €15,000 to €48,000 at the agency rates Clutch lists for Spain, and about €42,000 to €119,000 at Western European senior freelance rates. These ranges multiply 680 to 1,120 illustrative build hours by published hourly bands. Native iOS and Android apps cost more.

What do developers charge per hour in Spain?

Clutch lists US$25 to US$49 an hour for software development companies in Spain, about €22 to €43. Arc has no Spain row; its Western European senior freelance band is US$70 to US$120. INE puts average gross annual earnings in the information and communication sector at €42,741.94 for 2024.

Is outsourcing to Bangladesh cheaper than a Spanish agency?

Not much on hourly rate, according to Clutch, whose Spain band matches its most common worldwide band. The difference comes from hours needed, whether tests are included, fixed versus open pricing, and fit. If a Spanish agency wins on those, choose it.

What does Bizum cost through Stripe?

Stripe lists Bizum at 1.5% + €0.25 per successful charge, the same as a standard EEA card. Bizum payments run from €0.50 to €5,000, in euros, and do not support recurring payments, so subscriptions still need cards or SEPA Direct Debit.

What is the time difference between Madrid and Dhaka?

Dhaka is 5 hours ahead of Madrid in winter and 4 hours ahead in summer. With both teams on a 9:00 to 18:00 day, they share about 4 working hours in winter and 5 in summer, in the Madrid morning.

Does RAITHub work in Spanish or build mobile apps?

No to both. RAITHub delivers in English only and builds web applications and PWAs, not native iOS or Android apps. Spanish or Catalan interface text can be built in from copy you supply.
