Founder & Lead Engineer, RAITHub
India is the safer choice when you need scale: a far larger talent pool and a more mature vendor market. Bangladesh is usually cheaper: Arc's May 2026 data puts freelance rates at $18–$40 an hour in Bangladesh against $25–$60 in India. English and time zones are closer than most buyers expect; Dhaka is only 30 minutes ahead of India.
RAITHub is a software studio in Dhaka, so we have an interest in this comparison. That is why every number below has a named source, and why the section on where India wins is as long as the one on where Bangladesh wins. This guide is the two-country head-to-head. If you are also weighing Vietnam, Poland or Romania, read Bangladesh vs India vs Vietnam vs Eastern Europe instead.
Is it cheaper to outsource software development to Bangladesh or India?
Bangladesh, by roughly 15 to 30 percent depending on the measure: about 15% on Arc's average remote salary and about 30% on the midpoints of its freelance ranges. The gap is real but smaller than many buyers assume, and at agency level the two countries overlap heavily.
| Measure | Bangladesh | India | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelance hourly rate | $18–$40 | $25–$60 | Arc freelance rates, 26 May 2026 |
| Average salary, remote software engineer | $41,465 a year | $48,918 a year | Arc salary pages for Bangladesh and India |
| Agency hourly rate | Highly reviewed firms mostly list under $25 or $25–$49 | Typically $25–$49 | Clutch Bangladesh directory; Clutch pricing guide |
Read the table with care. Arc's salary figures are self-reported by developers in its remote network, who tend to be above the local average, and Arc's South Asia range of $22–$55 an hour covers both countries. Clutch's Bangladesh figure is a sample of listed firms, not an average. Checked on 29 September 2026.
The more useful point is that a 15–30% difference in cost is easily erased by rework, extra management time or a missed launch. The hidden cost of cheap offshore development works through that arithmetic, and the cost to hire developers in Bangladesh breaks the Bangladeshi numbers down by role and model.
Which country has the bigger talent pool?
India, by a wide margin. GitHub's Octoverse 2025 counts 21.9 million developers in India, second only to the United States, and projects 57.5 million by 2030 (GitHub Octoverse 2025).
We found no current, independently published developer headcount for Bangladesh that we would stand behind, so we do not quote one. The honest summary is that Bangladesh's pool is much smaller.
Pool size decides three things: how fast a vendor can add ten engineers, whether you can find a rare specialism, and how easily you can replace someone who leaves. For a product team of three to eight people, it matters far less than the quality of the specific team in front of you.
How does English compare between Bangladesh and India?
On the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, Bangladesh ranks 62nd with a score of 506, in the "moderate" band, and India ranks 74th with 484, in the "low" band (EF EPI 2025).
That is a narrower gap than the bands suggest, and the index measures adults who chose to take EF's test, not software engineers. In both countries professional developers read documentation, write code and discuss pull requests in English every day. Treat the index as a rough signal about the wider workforce, useful for support or project management roles, and test English directly in the interview and the first weeks of written updates.
How do the time zones compare?
Almost identically. India is on UTC+5:30 and Bangladesh on UTC+6, neither uses daylight saving, and the 30-minute difference rarely matters. The shared hours below assume both sides work 9:00 to 18:00 local time.
| Client city | Shared hours with Bangladesh | Shared hours with India | Edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| London (summer / winter) | 4 / 3 | 4.5 / 3.5 | India, by 30 minutes |
| Berlin (summer / winter) | 5 / 4 | 5.5 / 4.5 | India, by 30 minutes |
| Dubai | 7 | 7.5 | India, by 30 minutes |
| Singapore | 7 | 6.5 | Bangladesh, by 30 minutes |
| Sydney (winter AEST / summer AEDT) | 5 / 4 | 4.5 / 3.5 | Bangladesh, by 30 minutes |
| New York | 0 | 0 | Neither |
Westward clients gain half an hour with India; eastward clients gain half an hour with Bangladesh. Neither country shares standard hours with the US East Coast, so US teams working with either need an async-first process and an agreed short daily call.
What about data protection and data residency?
For EU and UK buyers, the two countries are in the same position: neither is on the European Commission's list of adequacy decisions, so a vendor that processes EU personal data needs standard contractual clauses and a transfer impact assessment. On the local side, Bangladesh's Advisory Council approved a Personal Data Protection Ordinance in October 2025, and its government-access provisions have drawn criticism (The Daily Star, October 2025).
India has a practical edge on residency: AWS runs two regions there, Mumbai and Hyderabad, and none in Bangladesh (AWS Regions). That matters only if your data must be hosted in the vendor's country, which is unusual. Most well-run offshore engagements keep production data in the client's own cloud account, wherever the team sits. This is general information, not legal advice.
Where does India win?
- Scale. The second-largest developer population on GitHub after the United States, so large teams and quick replacements are realistic.
- Rare specialisms. Enterprise platforms, niche languages and long-tail frameworks are much easier to staff from a pool of tens of millions.
- Vendor maturity. India has the more established outsourcing sector, with vendors used to enterprise procurement, security questionnaires and large programmes. Many Bangladeshi firms are younger and smaller.
- Third-party track record. More reviewed vendors, case studies and references to check. RAITHub itself has no published third-party reviews yet.
- In-country cloud regions, for the rare cases where hosting must be local to the vendor.
- Half an hour more overlap with Europe and the Gulf. Small, but real.
Where does Bangladesh win?
- Rates. Lower published freelance rates and average remote salaries in Arc's data.
- English on the index. A "moderate" EF EPI band against India's "low", though the gap between scores is modest.
- East Asia and Australia. Half an hour more overlap with Singapore and Sydney.
- Attention. A smaller market means a small product often gets senior people rather than a junior team behind a senior sales call. That depends on the vendor, not the country, so verify it.
Is Bangladesh or India better for my project?
Choose by your hardest constraint, then vet the specific team. The country sets a price band and a hiring pool; the team decides the outcome.
| If you need | Lean towards | Why |
|---|---|---|
| An MVP or small product team at the lowest rate | Bangladesh | Lower published rates for the same shape of team |
| 20 or more engineers within a quarter | India | A pool large enough to staff it |
| A rare enterprise or niche skill | India | More specialists to choose from |
| A vendor that passes enterprise procurement | India | More vendors with the certifications and history procurement asks for |
| Work with a Gulf or European client | Either | A 30-minute difference in overlap |
| Work with Singapore or Australia | Either, slight edge to Bangladesh | Half an hour more overlap |
| Live collaboration through the New York day | Neither | No shared standard hours; consider a nearshore team |
| Hosting inside the vendor's country | India | In-country cloud regions |
How do you test a vendor in either country before committing?
- Run a paid pilot of two to four weeks on a real slice of your product.
- Keep the repository and cloud accounts in your name from day one, with IP assigned to you.
- Ask for the test suite and CI results, not a slide about quality.
- Meet the engineers who will do the work, not only the person selling it.
- Agree the overlap window and update cadence in writing, using the table above.

Why RAITHub, if you choose Bangladesh?
- Founder-led. Rupak Amin, the founder and lead engineer, reviews the architecture on every engagement.
- Measured quality. PropDesk runs 1,024 automated tests, TheSkinProof (the founder's own venture, not a client) runs 750+ across 217 API endpoints, and Sundor Skin, a B2B platform for a client, runs 530+.
- Fixed quotes, not hourly billing. A free 15-minute technical audit, then a fixed written quote. How that works is on the pricing page.
- Two models only: fixed-scope projects, such as an MVP build, or a dedicated monthly team. You own the IP; an NDA is standard.
When is RAITHub the wrong choice?
- You need a large team fast. India's bigger vendors can staff it; a founder-led studio cannot honestly promise that.
- You need a certified vendor. RAITHub is not SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certified.
- You want developers placed in your team. RAITHub does not offer staff augmentation.
- You need third-party reviews before you talk to anyone. We have none published yet; we offer measurable work instead.
- You need delivery in a language other than English.

Frequently asked questions
Is Bangladesh cheaper than India for software development?
Usually, yes. Arc's May 2026 data puts freelance rates at $18–$40 an hour in Bangladesh and $25–$60 in India, and its average remote salary is $41,465 in Bangladesh against $48,918 in India. Agency rates in both countries mostly sit under $50 an hour.
Is India or Bangladesh better for a large development team?
India. GitHub counts 21.9 million developers there, and its vendor market is more mature, so staffing 20 or more engineers quickly is far more realistic.
What is the time difference between India and Bangladesh?
30 minutes. India is on UTC+5:30 and Bangladesh on UTC+6, and neither uses daylight saving, so both share almost the same hours with Europe, the Gulf and Asia.
Which has better English, Bangladesh or India?
On the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, Bangladesh ranks 62nd with 506 and India 74th with 484. The index samples voluntary test-takers, not developers, so interview for English directly.
Do EU companies need SCCs for both countries?
Yes. Neither Bangladesh nor India has an EU adequacy decision, so a vendor processing EU personal data in either needs standard contractual clauses and a transfer impact assessment. Confirm the details with your data protection adviser.
Where does India clearly beat Bangladesh?
Scale, rare specialisms, vendor maturity, third-party track record and in-country cloud regions. Bangladesh wins mainly on rates and slightly on English index scores.
