Nearshore Poland vs Offshore Bangladesh: An Honest Guide for German Teams

For a German team, nearshore Poland wins on time zone, language and data law: Poland shares Germany's clock, is an EU member so personal data needs no third-country transfer safeguards, and scores "very high" for English. Offshore Bangladesh wins on price: Arc puts Polish freelancers at $40–$80 an hour against $18–$40 in Bangladesh. Choose Poland for live collaboration; Bangladesh for scoped, well-documented work.

RAITHub is a software studio in Dhaka, so we are on one side of this comparison. That is why every number below has a named source, why the section on where Poland wins comes first, and why we say plainly that Bangladesh is offshore for Germany, not nearshore. Romania is similar to Poland on most points here, and we mention it where it differs.

What is the difference between nearshore and offshore for a German company?

Nearshore means a nearby country in the same or an adjacent time zone; for Germany that usually points to Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic or Portugal. Offshore means a distant country with a larger time difference, such as Bangladesh, India or Vietnam. The labels describe distance and overlap, not quality.

For a German buyer, "nearshore" in practice also often means "inside the EU", which matters more than the flight time. Poland has been an EU member state since 1 May 2004 (European Union: Poland). Bangladesh is outside the EU and has no EU adequacy decision.

Where does nearshore Poland clearly win?

On four points, and they are not small. If any of them is a hard requirement for you, Poland (or another EU nearshore country) is the better choice.

  • Time zone. Warsaw and Berlin are on the same clock all year, because both follow EU summer time. A full working day overlaps, so live pairing, same-afternoon answers and ad-hoc calls just work.
  • Data protection. A Polish vendor processing your customers' personal data is inside the EU. You still need an Article 28 processing agreement (AVV), but no standard contractual clauses and no transfer impact assessment. With a Bangladeshi vendor you need both, as our guide to outsourcing from Germany under the GDPR explains.
  • Language. On the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, Poland ranks 15th with a score of 600 and Romania 11th with 605, both "very high"; Bangladesh ranks 62nd with 506, "moderate". If you need German-speaking engineers, you are also far more likely to find them in a neighbouring EU country than in Dhaka. RAITHub works in English only.
  • Presence. A trip to a Polish vendor's office is a short journey from most German cities, and regular on-site workshops are realistic. RAITHub has no office in Germany or anywhere in the EU.

How do developer rates compare between Germany, Poland and Bangladesh?

Bangladesh is roughly half the Polish freelance rate, and Poland is roughly half the German one. At agency level the gap is similar.

MeasureGermanyPolandBangladesh
Freelance developer rate (Arc, May 2026)$85–$140 an hour$40–$80 an hour$18–$40 an hour
Average freelancer rate (freelancermap, 2026)€103 an hour, all disciplines surveyed––
Development company rate (Clutch)–Typically $50–$99 an hourMost highly reviewed firms list under $25 or $25–$49

Sources: Arc freelance developer rates by country, 26 May 2026, which also gives Western Europe at $70–$120 and Eastern Europe at $40–$85; the freelancermap Freelancer-Kompass 2026, a survey of about 5,400 freelancers run by the German freelance platform, where software and web development is the largest group at 29% of respondents; Clutch's software development pricing guide for Poland, updated September 2026; and the Clutch Bangladesh directory, a sample of listed firms rather than an average. Checked on 29 September 2026.

Two cautions. Rate ranges hide large differences in seniority and quality inside every country. And an hourly rate is not a project cost: a cheaper team that needs more of your time, or more rework, can cost more in total. The hidden cost of cheap offshore development works through that arithmetic.

How many working hours does each option share with Berlin?

With both sides working 9:00 to 18:00 local time, Poland shares the whole day and Bangladesh shares the German morning.

Team locationTime difference from BerlinShared hours, German summerShared hours, German winterShared window in Berlin time
WarsawNone9909:00–18:00
Bucharest+1 hour8809:00–17:00
Dhaka+4 hours in summer, +5 in winter5409:00–14:00 (summer), 09:00–13:00 (winter)

Dhaka is on UTC+6 with no daylight saving, so the gap changes when Germany changes its clocks. A 10:00 stand-up in Berlin lands in the Dhaka afternoon all year. What does not work with Dhaka is a German team that expects answers late in its own afternoon; decisions need to happen before lunch, or in writing.

Where does offshore Bangladesh win?

  • Cost. The published rates above put Bangladesh at around half of Poland at freelance level, and lower at agency level. For a fixed budget, that buys more engineering time, or the same scope with money left for testing.
  • A useful time shift. The Dhaka working day starts at 05:00 Berlin time in summer and 04:00 in winter. Feedback you write in the German afternoon is picked up the next Dhaka morning, while Germany is still asleep, and a revised version is often waiting when your day starts.
  • Fit with well-defined work. Fixed-scope builds with written specifications, acceptance criteria and a test suite depend less on live overlap. The written discipline that offshore work needs also leaves you with better documentation.
  • English as the working language. If your team already works in English, the "moderate" EF band matters less than the specific engineers; test English in the first calls and in written updates.

Which should a German company choose for its project?

Your situationLean towardsWhy
Personal data must stay inside the EU, with no third-country accessPoland or RomaniaNo Chapter V transfer at all
You need German-language meetings or documentationA German-speaking nearshore teamRAITHub works in English only
Engineers must pair live with your in-house team all dayPolandNine shared hours against four or five
Regular on-site workshops in GermanyPolandShort travel; no visa questions inside the EU
A defined MVP or module on a fixed budget, specified in EnglishBangladeshLower rates; the work suits written specifications and CI
Development on synthetic data, production kept in your EU cloudEitherThe transfer question shrinks when the team never sees personal data

Many German companies split the difference: a nearshore or in-house team for the parts that need constant contact, and an offshore team for a well-bounded product or module. That works when the boundary between the two is an API or a repository, not a shared to-do list.

What paperwork changes between a Polish and a Bangladeshi vendor?

With a Polish vendor processing personal data for you, you sign an AVV under Article 28 GDPR. With a Bangladeshi vendor you sign the AVV plus the standard contractual clauses (Module 2 for controller to processor) and document a transfer impact assessment, because Bangladesh is not on the European Commission's list of adequacy decisions. The design choice that shrinks most of this is keeping production data in your own EU account and giving the offshore team synthetic data; our GDPR outsourcing guide has the details and a pseudonymisation example.

On invoices, services bought by a German business from a foreign company, inside or outside the EU, are usually handled under the reverse charge, but your Steuerberater should confirm how it applies to your company. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

Why RAITHub for a German team

  • Honest about the model. We are offshore, in Dhaka, delivering in English. We sign DPAs and SCCs and follow your controls; we are not SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certified.
  • Built for written, testable scope. Sundor Skin, a B2B wholesale platform built for a client, runs 146 PostgreSQL tables with row-level security and 530+ tests; PropDesk runs 1,024 tests. Every engagement has a CI-gated test suite.
  • The German morning is our working afternoon. Stand-ups, reviews and decisions fit the shared window, and the rest runs in writing.
  • Clear terms. Fixed-scope projects or a dedicated monthly team, a free 15-minute technical audit, then a fixed written quote. You own the IP; an NDA is standard. See the SaaS development service.

When a German company should not hire us

  • You need delivery in German.
  • Your data must stay inside the EU with no third-country access, for contractual or regulatory reasons.
  • Procurement requires SOC 2 or ISO 27001.
  • You want developers placed in your team under your management; RAITHub does not offer staff augmentation.
  • You need people on site in Germany regularly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bangladesh nearshore or offshore for Germany?

Offshore. Dhaka is four hours ahead of Berlin in summer and five in winter, and Bangladesh is outside the EU. Nearshore for Germany usually means Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic or Portugal.

How much cheaper is Bangladesh than Poland for software development?

At freelance level, roughly half: Arc's May 2026 data puts Poland at $40–$80 an hour and Bangladesh at $18–$40. Clutch lists Polish development companies at typically $50–$99 an hour, while most highly reviewed Bangladeshi firms list under $25 or $25–$49.

Do I need standard contractual clauses for a Polish vendor?

No, because Poland is an EU member state, so there is no third-country transfer. You still need an Article 28 processing agreement (AVV) if the vendor handles personal data for you. Confirm with your data protection officer.

How many working hours overlap between Berlin and Dhaka?

With a 9:00 to 18:00 day on both sides, five hours in German summer time and four in winter. The shared window is the German morning. Warsaw shares the full nine hours.

What do freelance developers cost in Germany?

Arc puts German freelance developers at $85–$140 an hour in May 2026, and the freelancermap Freelancer-Kompass 2026 reports an average of €103 an hour across the roughly 5,400 freelancers it surveyed, not only developers.

Can a Bangladeshi team work with a German in-house team?

Yes, if the work is split along a clear boundary such as a module or an API, decisions happen in the German morning or in writing, and the working language is English. Live pairing all day is a better fit for a nearshore team.
