Software Development Company for Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean

Founder & Lead Engineer, RAITHub

A software development company for Trinidad and Tobago does not have to be in Port of Spain. RAITHub, based in Dhaka, builds web apps for Caribbean businesses in English, with a fixed daily 2-hour overlap at 09:00–11:00 Port of Spain time and a fixed written quote after a free 15-minute audit. An illustrative 780-hour first version comes to about TT$264,000 at US$50 an hour.

This guide is for founders and operators in Trinidad and Tobago and the English-speaking Caribbean, including Jamaica and Barbados, who need a web product built: a customer portal, a booking or ordering system, an internal tool, or a SaaS product sold across CARICOM. It covers cost in US dollars and local currencies, what local data protection law does and does not require yet, the payment question most Caribbean projects hit early, and how working hours line up. RAITHub builds web applications and progressive web apps (PWAs), not native iOS or Android apps.

Why would a Trinidad or Caribbean business hire a remote software team?

Mostly for capacity. Small markets tend to have small pools of engineers who have built and run a production web product end to end, and the ones who have are in demand. A remote team gives you a full set of skills (design, backend, testing, deployment) without hiring each one locally.

The trade-offs are real and worth naming early:

  • Time zones. Dhaka is 10 hours ahead of Port of Spain, so live time is limited to a fixed window. The rest runs on written handoffs.
  • No one on site. RAITHub has no office in the Caribbean. Workshops, demos and reviews happen on video calls.
  • Contracts across borders. You need IP assignment, an NDA and a processor agreement that work for you, and code and accounts in your name.

Language is not usually a trade-off here: RAITHub works in English only, which matches the working language of Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and Barbados. For how to check any team in Bangladesh before you sign, see whether it is safe to hire a Bangladesh software agency.

How much does a custom web app cost for a Trinidad business?

It is engineering hours times the rate. For a first version with sign-in, a few roles, one core workflow, payments, prices in more than one currency and an admin area, plan for roughly 650 to 950 hours. The table does the arithmetic for one illustrative scope of 780 hours.

The hours and both rates are assumptions chosen to show how the line items combine. They are not market benchmarks, not quotes and not RAITHub prices.

Deployment, monitoring and handover40US$2,000US$3,600

The same two totals in local currency, using the rates published by ExchangeRate-API on 30 September 2026 (6.76 TTD, 158.29 JMD and 2.00 BBD per US dollar):

CurrencyAt US$50/hour (US$39,000)At US$90/hour (US$70,200)

Jamaican dollarabout J$6.17 millionabout J$11.11 million
Barbados dollarabout BDS$78,000about BDS$140,400

Exchange rates move, and many Caribbean businesses also face practical limits on buying foreign currency. Before you commit, check the current rate with the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago or your bank, and agree in the contract which currency the price is fixed in and how it will be paid. That is a finance question, not an engineering one, but it decides whether the budget holds.

A smaller first version, such as one role, one currency and invoice-based payment, can come in well under half these totals. The MVP cost estimator lets you change the scope and watch the hours move. For how a Dhaka rate is built, see the cost to hire developers in Bangladesh.

What does the Trinidad and Tobago Data Protection Act require of an offshore developer?

Less than its length suggests, for now, because most of it is not in force. The Data Protection Act 2011 (Chapter 22:04 in the Laws of Trinidad and Tobago) was only partly proclaimed. The proclamations in the government's Digital Legislative Library entry for Chapter 22:04 show that Legal Notice 2 of 2012 brought Part I and sections 7 to 18, 22, 23, 25(1), 26 and 28 of Part II into force from 6 January 2012, and Legal Notice 220 of 2021 added section 42(a) and (b) from 23 August 2021. DLA Piper's Trinidad and Tobago summary says "no timetable has been set for enacting the remainder of the DPA".

Two points from the same summary matter for a remote vendor:

  • The Act's general privacy principles say personal information may be transferred outside Trinidad and Tobago only if the recipient country's laws provide comparable safeguards, but the list of such countries has not been published.
  • The more detailed cross-border provisions in section 72 are among the parts not yet in force.

On 1 October 2026 the library listed no other proclamation and still marked the Act as only partially proclaimed. The Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Legal Affairs is the place to confirm whether more of the Act has been proclaimed, or whether it has been amended, since.

In Jamaica, the Data Protection Act 2020 is administered by the Office of the Information Commissioner, which runs a registration process for data controllers. If you are a Jamaican business, check with the OIC whether you need to register and what it expects when a processor abroad handles your data.

This is general information, not legal advice. Which law applies, and what your contract and privacy notice need, depend on your business and your customers' countries; confirm with your adviser.

Whatever the law requires today, a sensible contract covers the same ground: what data the vendor can access and why, where it is stored, who can see it, how fast the vendor tells you about an incident, and what happens to the data at the end. RAITHub signs a data processing agreement, follows your controls, works in accounts you own and uses test data by default. It is not SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certified. If a larger customer sends you a security questionnaire, see answering a first security questionnaire without SOC 2.

How do Caribbean web apps take payments without Stripe?

Plan for this in week one. Stripe's list of countries where businesses can open an account does not include Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica or Barbados when we checked (Stripe global availability). A business registered there usually needs a card acquiring service from a local bank, a regional payment gateway, or invoice and bank-transfer payment with manual or semi-automatic reconciliation.

Which one fits depends on your bank, your volumes and whether customers pay in more than one currency, so the gateway is chosen with you during discovery, from the options your bank and business registration allow. The engineering work is similar whichever you pick:

  • A payment is "pending" until the gateway or the bank confirms it, not when the customer clicks.
  • Confirmation arrives through a signed callback or a statement file, and your system must check it before marking anything paid.
  • Bank transfers need matching: this transfer to that invoice, with a queue for the ones that do not match.

Money in more than one currency needs care too. Store amounts in minor units (cents) with their currency, and store the exchange rate used at the moment an invoice is issued, so a report run next month shows what the customer actually owed. A minimal version, as engineering guidance:

-- PostgreSQL: amounts in cents, never floats, with the rate frozen per invoice.
CREATE TABLE invoice (
  id           bigserial PRIMARY KEY,
  customer_id  bigint NOT NULL,
  amount_minor bigint NOT NULL CHECK (amount_minor >= 0),
  currency char(3) NOT NULL CHECK (currency IN ('TTD', 'JMD', 'BBD', 'USD')),
  usd_rate numeric(12, 6) NOT NULL, -- local units per US dollar when issued
  status text NOT NULL DEFAULT 'pending'
               CHECK (status IN ('pending', 'paid', 'failed', 'void')),
  issued_at timestamptz NOT NULL DEFAULT now()
);
type Currency = 'TTD' | 'JMD' | 'BBD' | 'USD'

export function formatMoney(amountMinor: number, currency: Currency, locale = 'en-TT'): string {
  return new Intl.NumberFormat(locale, { style: 'currency', currency }).format(amountMinor / 100)
}

// Uses the rate stored on the invoice, never today's rate.
export function toUsdMinor(amountMinor: number, usdRate: number): number {
  return Math.round(amountMinor / usdRate)
}

Budget for the tests around this: a callback that arrives twice, a transfer with the wrong reference, a refund in a different currency from the charge. The guide to testing payments and webhooks lists the cases.

What RAITHub has and has not shipped: RAITHub built Stripe rent collection for PropDesk, a property management platform with 4 roles and 1,024 automated tests. TheSkinProof, the founder's own venture rather than a client, runs bKash, Nagad, SSLCommerz and cash on delivery, which are local gateways and wallets in a market where Stripe is not the default either. RAITHub has not shipped a Caribbean payment gateway in production, so that scope is priced and tested as new work, and the quote says so.

What hours does a Dhaka team overlap with Port of Spain?

Dhaka is UTC+6 and Port of Spain is UTC−4, and neither changes its clocks, so the gap is 10 hours all year. RAITHub offers a fixed daily 2-hour overlap in the Dhaka evening, 19:00 to 21:00, which is 09:00 to 11:00 in Port of Spain. Everything else is async, with a written handoff every day.

CityOverlap windowChanges with the seasons?
Dhaka (UTC+6)19:00–21:00No
Port of Spain and Bridgetown (UTC−4)09:00–11:00No
Kingston (UTC−5)08:00–10:00No

That puts the live window at the start of the Caribbean working day, which suits a standup, a demo or a decision call. The rest of the day works like this: your team writes feedback during its day, RAITHub works on it overnight Caribbean time, and a written handoff is waiting in the morning. The working week is agreed per client when the engagement starts, including around Carnival and public holidays.

Why RAITHub for this

  • A fixed number before you commit. A free 15-minute technical audit, then a fixed written quote with its assumptions listed, as fixed scope or a dedicated monthly team. See pricing and engagement models.
  • The same window every day, all year. Neither Trinidad nor Bangladesh uses daylight saving, so 09:00 to 11:00 in Port of Spain never moves.
  • Experience outside the Stripe default. TheSkinProof runs on local gateways and wallets, and PropDesk runs Stripe rent collection, so both the pending-payment model and reconciliation are familiar ground.
  • Your code, accounts and data under your control. IP assigned to you, an NDA up front, a DPA, and repositories and hosting in your company's name.
  • Tests in the price. The MVP development service includes a real test suite gated in CI, not an optional extra.

When you don't need us

  • You need a native iOS or Android app. RAITHub builds web apps and PWAs, and does not offer native mobile development.
  • You need someone in the room. If the project depends on on-site workshops or all-day live collaboration, a local team fits better.
  • Your buyers require a certified supplier. RAITHub holds neither SOC 2 nor ISO 27001.
  • A regional product already does the job. If off-the-shelf software covers 90% of your process, pay for it and spend the difference on the business.
  • The project is mostly a payment gateway decision. Talk to your bank first; the software is the smaller part until that is settled.

Frequently asked questions

How much does custom software cost in Trinidad and Tobago?

It is hours times the rate. An illustrative 780-hour first version comes to US$39,000 at US$50 an hour, about TT$263,640, or US$70,200 at US$90 an hour, about TT$474,550. A smaller scope costs much less; a fixed quote after an audit gives the real figure.

Is the Trinidad and Tobago Data Protection Act fully in force?

No. It was partly proclaimed in January 2012, with section 42(a) and (b) added in August 2021, and DLA Piper reports no timetable for the rest, including the detailed cross-border section 72. Check with the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Legal Affairs for the current position. This is general information; confirm with your adviser.

Can a Caribbean business use Stripe?

Stripe's global availability page did not list Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica or Barbados when we checked. Businesses there usually use a local bank's card acquiring service, a regional gateway or bank transfers with reconciliation.

What hours does a Dhaka team overlap with Port of Spain?

RAITHub offers a daily 2-hour window, 19:00 to 21:00 in Dhaka, which is 09:00 to 11:00 in Port of Spain all year. The rest is async with written daily handoffs, and the working week is agreed per client.

Does RAITHub work with Jamaica and Barbados too?

Yes. The same daily window is 08:00 to 10:00 in Kingston and 09:00 to 11:00 in Bridgetown, and all delivery is in English. RAITHub has no office in the Caribbean and runs projects remotely.

Has RAITHub built a Caribbean payment integration before?

Not in production. RAITHub has shipped Stripe rent collection for PropDesk, and TheSkinProof, the founder's own venture, runs bKash, Nagad and SSLCommerz. A Caribbean gateway would be scoped, priced and tested as new work.
