Founder & Lead Engineer, RAITHub
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the work of getting your content quoted in AI answers, such as those from ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, rather than only ranking as a link. It means writing pages that answer a question outright, in clear language a model can lift and attribute. AEO does not replace SEO; it extends it, because answer engines read the same trustworthy pages search already rewards.
If you would rather have this done for you, see how RAITHub approaches it below, or read the SEO as a service overview, which covers SEO, AEO and local work together.
What does AEO actually mean?
An "answer engine" is any system that gives a direct answer instead of a list of links: an AI chatbot, or a search result that summarises sources at the top of the page. AEO is making sure that when such a system answers a question in your field, your page is one of the sources it draws on and names.
The mechanics differ from a classic search result. A ranked link invites a click; an AI answer often resolves the question in place and may cite a handful of pages beneath it. So the goal shifts from "rank first" to "be the clearest, most trustworthy source on this exact question", because that is what a model reaches for when it composes an answer. You will also see this called generative engine optimisation (GEO) in some writing; the aim is the same.
How is AEO different from classic SEO?
They overlap more than they differ, but the emphasis moves. Here is the honest split.
| Question | Classic SEO | Answer engine optimisation |
|---|---|---|
| What are you trying to win? | A ranked position and a click | A citation inside a generated answer |
| Who reads the page? | A person scanning results | A model composing an answer, then a person |
| What structure wins? | Title, headings, depth, links | A direct answer first, then the same depth |
| How is trust judged? | Relevance, links, experience | Clarity, consistency, verifiable facts |
| What technical work helps? | Crawlability, speed, structured data | The same, plus unambiguous, self-contained answers |
Notice the last two rows: the technical work is the same. A page that is fast, crawlable and marked up with structured data is easier for both a search crawler and an answer engine to parse. The technical SEO checklist covers that floor, and it is the floor for AEO too.
What makes a page quotable by an AI chatbot?
A model quotes what it can lift cleanly and trust. Four properties make a page quotable.
- An answer in the first sentence. If the opening paragraph answers the question outright, a model can quote it without reading your whole page. Burying the answer under an introduction hides it.
- Self-contained statements. Each key fact should make sense on its own, so it survives being lifted out of context. "It is 2.5 seconds" is useless; "Largest Contentful Paint should be 2.5 seconds or less" is quotable.
- Verifiable, specific facts. Models favour claims they can cross-check. A named source and a precise figure read as more trustworthy than a vague superlative.
- Clear structure. Question-style headings, short paragraphs and tables map neatly onto how a model breaks a topic into parts.
This is why the Google Search Essentials advice to write "helpful, reliable, people-first content" works for AEO too: a page written plainly for a person is exactly the page a model finds easiest to quote.
Does structured data help with AEO?
It helps, as a signal rather than a guarantee. Structured data in JSON-LD, which Google recommends, labels what each part of a page is: an FAQPage, an Organization, a product, a breadcrumb. That labelling removes ambiguity, and a frequently-asked-questions block in particular pairs a clean question with a clean answer, which is the exact shape an answer engine wants. It will not force a citation, but it makes your content easier to understand and reuse.
Buy, build or hire for AEO?
AEO is young, so the routes are less settled than for SEO. Here is the honest picture.
| Route | What it is | Choose this when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rewrite answer-first yourself | You restructure pages to lead with the answer and add structured data | You have a few key pages and some technical help | It is detailed work across many pages; easy to start and never finish |
| An AEO or GEO tracking tool | A tool that checks whether AI answers mention you | You want to measure presence across engines | A tool measures; it does not rewrite your pages or fix the code |
| A build-and-run partner | Someone restructures content, adds markup and tracks citations | You want SEO and AEO handled as one job | Beware anyone promising guaranteed citations; no one controls a model's output |
Do-it-yourself time estimate: 2 to 4 hours per page to rewrite answer-first and add structured data, more if the templates need code changes. The main risk is uneven work: a few pages done well and the rest left as long, unstructured prose that no engine quotes.
How RAITHub would approach this
RAITHub builds AEO into the same pass as SEO, because the work overlaps and splitting it wastes effort. For a content set that needs to show up in AI answers, the shape is:
- Answer-first rewrite: each page opens with a complete, quotable answer of a couple of sentences, followed by the depth that earns trust and the click.
- Structured data: FAQPage, Organization and breadcrumb markup in JSON-LD, so engines can parse the page without guessing.
- Self-contained facts: every key claim stands alone and cites a primary source, so it survives being lifted into an answer.
- Technical floor: speed and crawlability from the technical checklist, because an engine cannot quote a page it cannot read.
- Measured honestly: presence in AI answers and organic traffic, reported as a trend, never as a guaranteed outcome.
RAITHub runs this on its own ventures without an ad budget. TheSkinProof, the founder's own venture rather than a client, grows organic traffic and sales with no paid ads; this RAITHub site ranks for its own terms the same way. No guaranteed citations, no revenue figures. Next step: a free 15-minute audit, then a written scope.

Frequently asked questions
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for answer engine optimisation: the work of getting your content quoted inside AI answers and summarised search results, rather than only ranking as a link. Some writers call the same practice generative engine optimisation, or GEO.
Is AEO different from SEO?
It overlaps heavily. The technical floor, clarity and trustworthiness are shared. AEO adds an emphasis on answering a question outright, in self-contained statements, so a model can lift and attribute your words cleanly.
Can I guarantee ChatGPT will cite my site?
No. No one controls what a model outputs, so a guaranteed citation is not a real promise. What you can do is make your page the clearest, most verifiable source on a question, which is what gives it a genuine chance of being quoted.
Does structured data make my content more quotable?
It helps by removing ambiguity. Marking up an FAQ, an organisation or a breadcrumb in JSON-LD tells an engine what each part of the page is. It will not force a citation, but it makes the content easier to parse and reuse.
Do I need AEO if I already do SEO?
If your SEO already leads with clear answers and clean structure, you are most of the way there. AEO is less a new discipline than a sharper version of good SEO, tuned for engines that answer rather than only list.
How do I measure whether AEO is working?
Check whether AI answers mention or cite you on your key questions, and watch organic traffic and enquiries alongside it. Treat both as trends over months, not as a single number anyone can promise in advance.
