Founder & Lead Engineer, RAITHub
To get cited by AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini, make your page the clearest, most trustworthy source on one question: answer it outright in the first sentence, keep each fact self-contained and verifiable, mark the page up with structured data, and make sure a crawler can reach it. Models quote pages they can lift cleanly and trust. No one can guarantee a citation; these habits earn it honestly.
If you would rather have this handled for you, see how RAITHub approaches it below, or read the SEO as a service overview, which covers AEO alongside classic SEO.
Why do AI chatbots cite some pages and not others?
Because a model composing an answer reaches for sources it can use with the least risk. That favours pages where the answer is stated plainly, the facts stand on their own, and the claims can be checked. A long, meandering page may be relevant, but if the useful sentence is buried in paragraph nine and hedged with qualifiers, it is harder to lift and riskier to trust, so another page gets quoted instead.
This is the same quality that Google Search Essentials calls "helpful, reliable, people-first content". A page written plainly for a person, that answers what was asked, is the page a model finds easiest to quote. Getting cited is less a trick than being the clearest answer, stated outright. The broader discipline is answer engine optimisation.
What page structure makes content quotable?
Four properties, and they compound.
| Property | Do this | Why a model likes it |
|---|---|---|
| Answer first | Answer the question in the opening sentence or two | The model can quote it without reading the whole page |
| Self-contained facts | Write each claim so it makes sense alone | It survives being lifted out of context |
| Specific and verifiable | Name a source and a precise figure, not a vague claim | A checkable fact reads as more trustworthy |
| Clear structure | Question headings, short paragraphs, tables | Maps onto how a model breaks a topic into parts |
Compare two sentences. "Our site is really fast" is unquotable: no model will lift a boast. "This page's Largest Contentful Paint is under 2.5 seconds, the threshold Google sets for a good score" is quotable, because it is specific, attributed and true. The second is what a chatbot can safely repeat.
Does structured data help get me cited?
It helps, as a signal rather than a guarantee. Structured data in JSON-LD, which Google recommends, labels what each part of a page is, using the schema.org vocabulary. A frequently-asked-questions block in particular pairs a clean question with a clean answer, the exact shape an answer engine wants to reuse. Marking up an Organization also tells engines who you are, which helps them attribute a quote to the right source. None of this forces a citation; it removes the ambiguity that makes a model skip your page.
What technical floor lets a model reach my page?
A model can only quote a page it, or the search index behind it, can fetch and read. So the technical floor for citations is the floor for ranking:
- Crawlable and indexable: real URLs, internal links, no stray
noindex, a correct sitemap. The sitemap-domain fix shows how one wrong line hides everything. - Fast enough: Core Web Vitals at Largest Contentful Paint 2.5s or less, Interaction to Next Paint 200ms or less, Cumulative Layout Shift 0.1 or less (web.dev).
- Server-rendered content: if the useful text only appears after heavy client-side JavaScript, some crawlers may not see it. Render the answer in the HTML.
The full list is in the technical SEO checklist. Get the floor right and the content work can actually pay off.
Buy, build or hire to get cited?
The work is editing and engineering, so the routes split on who does each.
| Route | What it is | Choose this when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rewrite yourself | You restructure pages answer-first and add markup | You have a few key pages and some technical help | Detailed work across many pages; easy to leave half-done |
| A citation-tracking tool | A tool that checks which AI answers mention you | You want to measure presence across engines | It measures; it does not rewrite pages or fix code |
| A build-and-run partner | Someone rewrites, marks up and tracks citations | You want SEO and AEO handled as one job | Distrust any promise of guaranteed citations |
Do-it-yourself time estimate: 2 to 4 hours per page to rewrite answer-first and add structured data, plus template changes if the markup is missing site-wide. The main risk is doing a few pages well and leaving the rest as long prose no engine quotes.
How RAITHub would approach this
RAITHub treats getting cited as part of the same pass as SEO, because the work overlaps.
- Answer-first rewrite: each page opens with a complete, quotable answer, then the depth that earns trust.
- Self-contained, sourced facts: every key claim stands alone and cites a primary source.
- Structured data: FAQPage, Organization and breadcrumb JSON-LD, validated before shipping.
- Technical floor: crawlability, speed and server-rendered content, so an engine can actually read the page.
- Measured honestly: presence in AI answers tracked as a trend, never promised.
RAITHub runs this on its own ventures with no ad budget. TheSkinProof, the founder's own venture rather than a client, grows organic traffic and sales with no paid ads, and this site ranks for its own terms the same way. No guaranteed citations, no revenue figures. Next step: a free 15-minute audit, then a written scope.
To start, tell RAITHub which questions you want to be the cited answer to. For the fuller discipline, read what answer engine optimisation is.
Frequently asked questions
Can I guarantee ChatGPT or Gemini will cite my site?
No. No one controls a model's output, so a guaranteed citation is not a real promise. What you can do is make your page the clearest, most verifiable source on a question, which gives it a genuine chance of being quoted.
What is the single biggest thing I can do?
Answer the question in the first sentence. If the opening states the answer plainly, a model can quote it without reading the whole page. Burying the answer under an introduction is the most common reason a relevant page is not cited.
Does structured data get me cited?
It helps rather than guarantees. Marking up an FAQ, an organisation or a breadcrumb in JSON-LD removes ambiguity about what each part of the page is, which makes the content easier for an engine to parse and reuse.
Do AI chatbots read JavaScript-heavy pages?
Not always. If the useful text only appears after heavy client-side JavaScript, some crawlers may miss it. Render the answer in the HTML so it is there to read, whatever the engine's capabilities.
Is getting cited different from ranking on search?
It overlaps heavily. The same clear, fast, trustworthy, well-structured page that ranks is the one a model quotes. The main extra emphasis is answering outright, in self-contained statements a model can lift cleanly.
How do I know if it is working?
Ask the assistants your buyers use the questions your pages answer, and see whether you are mentioned or cited, then track that over time alongside organic traffic. Treat it as a trend, not a single number anyone can promise in advance.
