QA Outsourcing: How to Choose a Partner (and What to Ask)

Choose a QA outsourcing company by the model, not the rate. Decide first whether you want hourly testers you manage, a dedicated team the vendor manages, or a fully managed service that owns the result. Then check that tests live in your repository, that limits are honest, and that you can start with a one-off audit. The lowest hourly rate often costs the most once your management time is counted.

If you would rather see how one studio runs it, read how RAITHub would test this below, or the QA as a Service overview.

What are the QA outsourcing models?

"QA outsourcing" covers three arrangements that behave very differently. Knowing which one you are being offered makes quotes comparable.

ModelWho manages the testersYou pay forSuits
Hourly or per-tester outsourcingYouTime: hours or testers per monthA bounded, well-defined burst of testing
Dedicated QA teamThe providerA team working on your product each monthLarger products and fast release cycles
Managed QA as a serviceThe providerA managed result: plan, testing, reporting, sign-offYou ship often and want the outcome owned for you

A fourth arrangement, staff augmentation, places a vendor's testers inside your team under your managers. It is closer to hiring with a different payroll, and RAITHub does not offer it. How a dedicated team differs from freelancers is covered in the dedicated QA team guide.

What questions reveal a real QA partner?

Ask these before you compare prices. They surface the difference between a partner and a pool of hours.

  • Which kinds of testing do you do in-house? Manual, mobile, security, accessibility and automation each need different skills. A partner names its gaps.
  • Where do tests and reports live? In your repository and your tracker, or on the vendor's machines you lose at contract end?
  • Who manages the testers day to day? If the answer is "you", budget your own time; you are buying hands, not an outcome.
  • Can we start with a fixed-price audit? A partner lets you judge the work before a monthly commitment.
  • What do you not do? Certified pentests, legal accessibility certificates and mobile app development are common gaps; an honest vendor names them.
  • How do you overlap with our time zone? Ask for the real overlap hours and how handoffs work when you are offline.

The in-house alternative to all of this is weighed in in-house QA vs outsourced QA vs QAaaS.

What does QA outsourcing cost?

Rates depend on region and on manual versus automation skill. One 2026 guide puts manual QA at $8 to $55 an hour in India and Southeast Asia, $25 to $110 in Eastern Europe and $80 to $150 or more in North America, with automation 20 to 50% higher everywhere (QA Madness). Freelance marketplaces sit lower: Upwork lists a median of $35 an hour for QA engineers (Upwork QA engineer rates). These are market figures, not RAITHub prices; the breakdown is in QAaaS pricing.

The published rate is only the visible cost. If you manage outsourced testers yourself, someone on your team writes their test plans, answers their questions and reviews their reports, which is why a slightly higher managed rate often beats a cheap hourly one.

The hidden cost of managing testers yourself

Hourly outsourcing looks lowest on the rate card and often is not, once your own time is counted. A tester with no plan and no lead tends to become a manual checker of whatever developers hand over, so the quality depends entirely on how well you direct them. If nobody on your side has the hours to do that well, a managed service, where the provider owns the plan and the method, usually produces more caught bugs per dollar. The rule that keeps any outsourced arrangement healthy: one bug tracker, one test repository, and one person who decides when a release is ready.

What limits should you confirm before signing?

  • Security testing scope. Application-level testing against OWASP guidance finds real weaknesses, but it is not a CREST- or PCI-accredited penetration test and issues no attestation. Confirm which you need.
  • Accessibility scope. A WCAG 2.2 audit reports what fails and how to fix it; it does not certify legal compliance with the ADA, EAA or Section 508. That is general information; confirm with your adviser.
  • Mobile. Many QA companies test mobile apps but do not build them. Confirm the boundary if you need both.
  • Coverage hours and language. A single studio does not give round-the-clock coverage; confirm overlap and reporting language up front.

Why RAITHub for QA outsourcing?

  • A managed service, not seats. RAITHub owns the plan, method and reporting and answers for the result; it does not offer staff augmentation.
  • Breadth from one provider. Manual and exploratory testing with UAT support, mobile testing on real devices, security testing against OWASP guidance, WCAG 2.2 accessibility audits, and automation, API and performance testing.
  • Start with an audit. A fixed-price pre-launch audit lets you judge the work before any monthly commitment.
  • Counted suites. PropDesk runs 1,024 automated tests and Sundor Skin runs 530+. TheSkinProof, the founder's own venture, runs 750+.

RAITHub is a single studio founded in 2024 in Dhaka, serving clients worldwide in English, with a daily overlap window for US and other time zones and written daily handoffs for the rest. It has no standalone QA case study yet beyond those test counts.

When you don't need a QA outsourcing company

  • When your developers maintain a healthy automated suite and only need devices. Buy a device cloud.
  • When the problem is the code, not the testing. Start with a code rescue diagnostic.
  • When you need a certified pentest or a legal accessibility certificate. Use an accredited firm.
  • When you want testers under your own managers. That is staff augmentation, which RAITHub does not offer.

How RAITHub would test this

  • Scope: the journeys and roles that matter, the platforms and devices, the test types, and the overlap hours you need.
  • Start small: a one-off audit with a ranked bug report, so you judge the work first.
  • Then a model that fits: a monthly plan or a dedicated team, with bugs in your tracker and automated tests in your repository.
  • Limits in writing: security testing is application-level, not a certified pentest; accessibility audits do not certify legal compliance.

Timeline: a one-off audit is fixed in scope and dates before it starts; a plan or dedicated team runs month to month. You receive: a test strategy, bug reports, automated tests and CI configuration in your repository, a handover document, full IP and an NDA. Next step: a free 15-minute audit, then a written fixed quote. RAITHub publishes no rates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a QA outsourcing company?

Choose by model first, then rate. Decide whether you want hourly testers you manage, a dedicated team the vendor manages, or a fully managed service. Then check that tests live in your repository, that limits are honest, and that you can start with a one-off audit.

Does the lowest QA outsourcing rate win on value?

Often not. A low hourly rate usually means you supply the plan and manage the testers, so your own time is a hidden cost. A higher managed rate, where the provider owns the outcome, frequently catches more bugs per dollar.

What is the difference between a dedicated QA team and staff augmentation?

A dedicated team is managed by the provider, who answers for the result. Staff augmentation places testers under your management, so you run them. RAITHub offers a managed dedicated team, not staff augmentation.

How much does it cost to outsource QA?

It depends on region and skill. Manual QA runs $8 to $55 an hour offshore and $80 to $150 or more in North America, with automation 20 to 50% higher. RAITHub quotes a fixed price per scope after a free audit rather than a public rate card.

Can we start with one project before a long contract?

Yes. A fixed-price one-off audit gives you a ranked bug report over your critical journeys, so you can judge a vendor's work before agreeing to a monthly plan or a dedicated team.

What should an outsourced QA company not claim?

That its application security testing is a certified penetration test, that its accessibility audit certifies legal compliance, or that it builds the mobile apps it tests. An honest partner names these limits before you sign.
