Founder & Lead Engineer, RAITHub
Mobile app testing in 2026 costs two things: tester time and device time. Published rates run from about $8 an hour for offshore manual testers to $200 or more for automation engineers in North America. Real-device cloud time starts at $0.17 per device minute on AWS Device Farm, or a flat $250 per device a month on several clouds. Platforms, device count and test types decide the total.
If you would rather have it tested for you, see how RAITHub would test this below. RAITHub tests iOS and Android apps on real devices and device clouds; it does not build mobile apps. All figures here are market prices from the sources cited, checked on 7 October 2026. None of them is a RAITHub price.
What are you actually paying for when you buy mobile app testing?
Every mobile testing quote is a mix of four costs. Knowing which one dominates tells you where to negotiate.
- People. Testers who design cases, run them, explore and write bug reports. This is usually the largest line.
- Devices. Either physical phones you buy and maintain, or minutes and slots on a device cloud: a service that hosts real phones in a data centre and lets you drive them remotely.
- Automation. Engineering time to write and maintain scripted tests, plus the cloud time to run them on every build.
- Overhead. Build distribution (TestFlight for iOS, an internal track for Android), test accounts, seeded data and a stable staging backend. Weak overhead turns paid tester hours into waiting time.
What do mobile app testers cost per hour in 2026?
Mobile testers are priced like other QA engineers, with automation carrying a premium. QA Madness publishes these 2026 ranges (QA Madness QA outsourcing costs):
| Region | Manual QA, per hour | Automation QA, per hour |
|---|---|---|
| India and Southeast Asia | $8 to $55 | $12 to $75 |
| Latin America | $20 to $95 | $30 to $130 |
| Eastern Europe | $25 to $110 | $35 to $150 |
| Western Europe | $60 to $160 | $85 to $210 |
| North America | $80 to $150+ | $110 to $200+ |
The same source puts automation 20 to 50% above manual testing in every region. The spread inside each row reflects seniority, contract length and specialism, and mobile automation (Appium, Detox, Maestro) sits towards the upper half because fewer engineers do it well.
What do device clouds cost in 2026?
Device clouds price either by the minute or by the device slot per month. These are the published list prices on 7 October 2026.
| Service | Pay-as-you-go | Flat or plan price | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| AWS Device Farm | $0.17 per device minute; first 1,000 minutes free | Unmetered slot from $250 a month; private devices from $200 a month | Real Android and iOS phones (AWS Device Farm pricing) |
| Firebase Test Lab | Physical devices $5 an hour, virtual $1 an hour, after a daily free allowance | None | Deprecated; shuts down on 30 September 2027 (Firebase Test Lab pricing) |
| BrowserStack | None | Live with mobile devices from $39 a month billed annually; Automate desktop and mobile from $175 a month per parallel test | Native-app products (App Live, App Automate) are priced on the same page (BrowserStack pricing) |
| Maestro Cloud | None | $250 per device a month; the CLI is free and open source | Hosted Android, iOS and web devices (Maestro pricing) |
One date matters if you are planning a budget today. Google says Firebase Test Lab is deprecated and will be fully shut down on 30 September 2027, with the Developer Device Platform on Google Cloud as the migration path. That platform matches Test Lab rates until 30 April 2027 and then moves to new pay-as-you-go and per-slot pricing (Firebase Test Lab migration guide). Do not build a two-year plan on Test Lab prices.
How much does one automated test run on real devices cost?
Work it out from device minutes. Take a 20-minute automated suite run on 10 real devices on AWS Device Farm:
- 20 minutes times 10 devices is 200 device minutes.
- 200 minutes at $0.17 is $34 per full run, after the free 1,000 minutes are used.
- Twenty runs a month is about $680.
At that volume, flat slots start to win: an unmetered slot from $250 a month runs as many minutes as you can fit on it. The general rule is to pay per minute while the suite is small or runs nightly, and to switch to slots when the per-minute bill passes the slot price. The device bill is almost always smaller than the engineering time to keep the suite healthy, so do not choose a cloud on price alone.
What drives the cost of mobile app testing?
Seven things decide where a quote lands.
- Platforms. Supporting both iOS and Android roughly doubles the device matrix and much of the manual work. StatCounter puts worldwide mobile share at 69.17% Android and 30.81% iOS in September 2026 (StatCounter mobile OS share), but your own analytics decide the split, not the world average.
- Device and OS coverage. Android spreads across many makers, screen sizes and OS versions. iOS is narrower: Apple reported iOS 26 on 79% of all devices as of 7 June 2026 (Apple App Store adoption). Each extra device or OS version adds runs, not just setup.
- Test types. Functional and regression testing is the base. Interruption, network, battery, performance, accessibility and security checks each add time. Our mobile app testing checklist lists what each covers.
- Manual versus automated. Automation costs more to set up and less on each later release. Our comparison of Appium, Detox and Maestro covers the tool choice.
- Real devices versus emulators. Emulators are cheap and fast but miss hardware behaviour. The trade-off is covered in real devices, emulators or a device cloud.
- Release frequency. A weekly release with manual regression is paid for every week. A quarterly release can live with more manual work.
- Readiness. Stable builds, test accounts, seeded data and a working staging API. Without them, every tester hour costs more because part of it is spent waiting.
What does a typical engagement look like in tester hours?
As an illustration only, using the market rates above: a manual regression pass across two platforms and six devices that takes 40 tester hours would cost about $320 to $2,200 at Indian and Southeast Asian rates, and about $3,200 to $6,000 or more at North American rates. The same pass repeated weekly is a monthly cost; automated, most of it becomes a one-off build cost plus device minutes. These numbers come from the published ranges, not from any vendor quote, and real quotes depend on the scope above.
Platform rules also add fixed checks to every release. From 31 August 2026, new Android apps and updates must target Android 16 (API level 36) to be submitted to Google Play (Google Play target API requirement). Apple lists crashes, broken links, placeholder content and missing demo accounts among the common reasons apps are rejected (Apple App Review). Testing for these is cheap; a rejected release is not.
Buy, build or hire?
| Option | What you pay for | Choose this when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A tool or SaaS testing platform (device cloud, Maestro Cloud) | Device minutes or slots; your team writes and runs the tests | You have engineers with time to own the suite | Device time is cheap; the people time to maintain tests is not |
| Freelancers or crowdtesting | Hours or test cycles on testers' own devices | You need wide device coverage for a short burst before launch | Uneven bug report quality; little continuity between cycles |
| An in-house QA hire | Salary, devices and tools | You release often and mobile is the core product for years | One person rarely covers manual, automation and security; hiring takes months |
| A managed QAaaS team | A monthly plan or a fixed-price audit with defined deliverables | You want coverage without hiring, and someone accountable for the result | Check who owns the test assets and whether bugs come with reproduction steps |
For a broader view of QA pricing models, see QAaaS pricing: monthly plans, one-off audits and dedicated QA teams and our earlier guide to outsourced QA and test automation costs.
How can you lower mobile testing cost without lowering quality?
- Pick devices from your analytics. Cover the devices and OS versions that make up most of your sessions, plus one old, low-memory Android phone.
- Automate the journeys that earn money first. Sign-up, login, payment and the core workflow. Leave rare paths to exploratory testing.
- Run emulators on every pull request, real devices before release. This keeps device-cloud minutes for the runs that need them.
- Fix flaky tests or delete them. A suite nobody trusts costs money and protects nothing.
- Give testers a ready environment. Test accounts, seeded data and a written list of what changed in the build.
Why RAITHub for mobile app testing?
RAITHub is an engineering studio that writes tests for production software, so mobile testing comes with the same habits: reproducible bug reports, tests in your repository, and gates in your CI.
- Real devices and device clouds. Manual and exploratory testing on iOS and Android, with automated suites run on a device cloud chosen for your device mix.
- Three ways to buy. A monthly QA plan, a fixed-price pre-launch audit, or a dedicated QA team that RAITHub manages and bills monthly. Testers are never placed under your management; this is not staff augmentation.
- Counted test work. RAITHub's web products carry large automated suites: 750+ tests on TheSkinProof (the founder's own venture, not a client), 530+ on Sundor Skin and 1,024 on PropDesk. There is no published mobile case study yet, so treat those as evidence of testing discipline, not mobile results.
- You own everything. Test cases, scripts and reports belong to you, with IP assigned and an NDA signed first.
When you don't need us
- You need the app built or fixed in native code. RAITHub tests mobile apps; it does not develop them. Your developers or a mobile development studio fix what testing finds.
- You need hundreds of devices in many countries at once. A crowdtesting platform is built for that kind of reach.
- You have a mobile engineer with time to own the suite. A device cloud and an open-source framework may be all you need.
- You need testers working inside your team under your managers. RAITHub does not offer staff augmentation.
How RAITHub would test this
- Scope: agree the platforms, the device and OS matrix from your analytics, the journeys that matter most, and the test types (functional, regression, interruption, network, accessibility).
- First pass: manual and exploratory testing on real devices, with each bug filed with steps, device, OS version, build number and a screen recording.
- Automation: scripted tests for the money journeys, run on emulators on each pull request and on a device cloud before release.
- Release gate: a short pre-submission check against store rules, so a release is not rejected for a crash or a missing demo account.
- What you receive: a test plan, the device matrix, bug reports, automated tests in your repository wired into CI, and a written handover. IP is yours and an NDA is standard.

Frequently asked questions
How much does mobile app testing cost in 2026?
Tester time runs from about $8 an hour offshore for manual QA to $200 or more for automation engineers in North America, on published 2026 ranges. Real-device cloud time adds $0.17 per device minute on AWS Device Farm, or a flat slot of about $250 a device per month on several clouds. Your platforms, devices and test types set the total.
Is it cheaper to test on emulators?
Yes, per run. Emulators are free on your own machines and fast in CI. They miss hardware behaviour such as cameras, sensors, real memory limits and real networks, so most teams use emulators on every change and real devices before each release.
How many devices should I test on?
Start from your analytics: cover the devices and OS versions behind most of your sessions on each platform, plus at least one older, low-memory Android phone. For a new app with no data, a small matrix of recent and older iPhones and a spread of Android makers is a reasonable start.
Does testing both iOS and Android double the cost?
It roughly doubles device coverage and manual work, but not everything. Test design, bug triage and cross-platform automation tools such as Maestro or Appium can be shared, so the second platform usually costs less than the first.
Does RAITHub build mobile apps?
No. RAITHub tests iOS and Android apps on real devices and device clouds, and reports each bug with steps to reproduce it. Your own developers or a mobile development studio fix the code.
Can I get a one-off test before launch instead of a monthly plan?
Yes. A fixed-price pre-launch QA audit is one of the three ways RAITHub offers QA, alongside a monthly plan and a managed dedicated team. The scope and price are set in a written quote after a free 15-minute call.
