Founder & Lead Engineer, RAITHub
A custom web app MVP in Australia typically costs about A$94,000 to A$230,000 from an onshore agency, or about A$24,000 to A$76,000 from an offshore agency in Bangladesh. Those ranges multiply 660 to 1,080 build hours by Clutch's published hourly bands, converted at the RBA rate. Native iOS and Android apps cost more. RAITHub quotes a fixed price after a free 15-minute audit.
This guide is for Australian founders, property managers and small-business owners pricing their first custom product. It breaks the number into line items you can challenge, shows where the rates come from, and says plainly when an agency, onshore or offshore, is the wrong answer. RAITHub is a software studio in Dhaka, so we have an interest in the offshore side of the comparison; every outside figure is linked so you can check it.
What does it cost to build an app in Australia?
For a first release of a web application, with sign-in, a few user roles, an admin area, payments and an automated test suite, most quotes land in the ranges above. The biggest driver is not the country; it is how many screens, roles and integrations the first release really needs.
A word on "app". Many Australian buyers say app and mean a product that runs on a phone. A web app works in a phone browser and on desktop from one codebase. Native iOS and Android apps need separate builds, app store reviews and more testing, and they push the budget up. RAITHub builds web applications only; it does not build native mobile apps. If you need an App Store listing on day one, budget for a mobile specialist.
What do developers charge per hour in Australia, and offshore?
Clutch's pricing guide lists US$100 to US$149 an hour as the typical agency rate in Australia, against a most common global band of US$25 to US$49 (Clutch software development pricing guide, updated September 2026). Converted at the Reserve Bank of Australia's rate of A$1 = US$0.6987 on 29 September 2026 (RBA exchange rates), that is about A$143 to A$213 an hour onshore.
| Who does the work | Published rate (USD) | In AUD (at A$1.43 per US$1) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Australian agency | US$100–149/hr | A$143–213/hr | Clutch pricing guide |
| Senior freelancer, Australia and New Zealand | US$80–125/hr | A$114–179/hr | Arc freelance rates 2026 |
| Bangladesh agency (most listed firms) | Under US$25 to US$49/hr | Up to A$70/hr; A$36–70 for the US$25–49 band | Clutch Bangladesh directory |
| In-house software engineer, Australia | n/a | A$128,060 average advertised salary, before super and on-costs | SEEK salary data |
These are market figures, checked on 30 September 2026, not RAITHub prices. RAITHub publishes no hourly rate. Rates also say nothing about how many hours a vendor needs, or how much of the work is rework, which is why the next table works in hours first.
What are the line items in an app development quote?
A credible quote splits into discovery, design, frontend, backend, payments, access control, QA, infrastructure and project management. The hours below are illustrative assumptions for a typical first release, such as a tenant portal or a booking product, not benchmarks and not a quote. Multiplying them by the onshore and offshore agency bands above gives the ranges in the opening paragraph.
| Line item | Illustrative hours | Onshore agency (A$143–213/hr) | Offshore agency (A$36–70/hr) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery and written spec | 40–60 | A$5,720–12,780 | A$1,440–4,200 |
| UX and UI design | 60–100 | A$8,580–21,300 | A$2,160–7,000 |
| Frontend (screens, forms, responsive layout) | 160–240 | A$22,880–51,120 | A$5,760–16,800 |
| Backend, API and database | 160–240 | A$22,880–51,120 | A$5,760–16,800 |
| Payments (cards plus PayTo or BPAY) | 40–80 | A$5,720–17,040 | A$1,440–5,600 |
| Sign-in, roles and admin area | 40–80 | A$5,720–17,040 | A$1,440–5,600 |
| QA and automated tests | 80–140 | A$11,440–29,820 | A$2,880–9,800 |
| Hosting, CI and deployment | 20–40 | A$2,860–8,520 | A$720–2,800 |
| Project management and demos | 60–100 | A$8,580–21,300 | A$2,160–7,000 |
| Total | 660–1,080 | A$94,380–230,040 | A$23,760–75,600 |
Use the table to question a quote, not to write one. If a quote has no QA line, the testing is either hidden in the other lines or missing. If discovery is zero, the vendor is pricing a spec it has not written yet. For your own scope, the MVP cost estimator gives a range in a few minutes, and what a US$30k MVP budget buys shows what gets cut when the budget is fixed.
Is it cheaper to hire an in-house developer in Australia?
Rarely for a first release. SEEK puts the average advertised software engineer salary in Australia at A$128,060 a year (SEEK, September 2026). Six months of one engineer is about A$64,000 in salary alone, before superannuation, payroll costs, recruitment, equipment and the months it takes to hire.
The bigger issue is coverage. The line items above need design, frontend, backend, testing and deployment skills. One hire rarely brings all of them, and nobody reviews their code. An in-house team makes sense once the product has users and a roadmap measured in years. For the first release, a fixed-scope project usually costs less in total and ends with something you can show investors or customers.
How do Australian payment rails change the scope?
Payments are often the line that grows, because Australian customers expect more than cards. Each rail below is a separate integration to scope, test and reconcile. This is engineering guidance: RAITHub has shipped Stripe rent collection in PropDesk, but has not shipped PayTo, BPAY or NPP integrations.
- Cards through Stripe. Stripe's Australian pricing page lists 1.7% + A$0.30 for domestic cards, plus 2% where currency conversion is needed (Stripe Australia pricing, checked 30 September 2026).
- PayTo and BECS Direct Debit. PayTo lets a customer authorise payments from their bank account, using a PayID or BSB and account number, and manage the agreement in their own online banking (Australian Payments Plus: PayTo). Stripe lists BECS Direct Debit and PayTo at 1% + A$0.30, capped at A$3.50.
- NPP, Osko and PayID. The New Payments Platform connects over 100 banks and fintechs and settles payments 24/7, including weekends (Australian Payments Plus: NPP). Real-time receipt means your reconciliation logic has to cope with money arriving at any hour.
- BPAY. Customers pay from online banking using a biller code and a customer reference number (CRN); BPAY is available in over 140 banks and financial institutions (Australian Payments Plus: BPAY). Generating and validating CRNs, and matching incoming payments to them, is its own piece of work.
The fee difference is real money for recurring payments. On a A$2,000 monthly rent or subscription, a domestic card at Stripe's listed rate costs A$34.30; the same payment by PayTo or BECS through Stripe hits the A$3.50 cap. Whether that saving justifies a second integration depends on volume. The online rent collection guide covers the failure cases, such as partial payments and reversals, that every rail needs.
What does an app cost to run after launch?
Plan for hosting, a database, email delivery, error monitoring, payment fees and a maintenance budget for security updates and small changes. For an early product these are usually hundreds of dollars a month, not thousands, but payment fees scale with revenue. What a SaaS costs to run each month breaks the infrastructure side down line by line.
If you hire an overseas vendor, ask your accountant whether GST applies to imported services for your business, and how foreign-currency invoices are treated. This is general information, not tax advice; confirm the current rule with your adviser and the Australian Taxation Office.
How many working hours does an Australian team share with Dhaka?
Dhaka runs on UTC+6 with no daylight saving. With both sides working 9:00 to 18:00:
- Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart: about 5 shared hours, falling to 4 during daylight saving (AEDT), which runs from 4 October 2026 to 4 April 2027 (NSW Government: daylight saving).
- Brisbane: about 5 hours all year, since Queensland does not observe daylight saving.
- Perth: about 7 hours, the largest window in Australia.
The shared time is the Australian afternoon: 13:00 to 18:00 in Sydney outside daylight saving, 14:00 to 18:00 during it, and 11:00 to 18:00 in Perth. Questions raised then are answered the same day, and work done after Sydney closes is waiting the next morning. RAITHub agrees the working week with each client and sends written daily handoffs, so progress does not depend on the overlap alone.
Should an Australian startup pay a fixed price or by the hour?
A fixed price once the scope is written down, hourly while it is still being discovered. A fixed price moves the overrun risk to the vendor, which is why discovery comes first and the quote lists its assumptions. Fixed price vs time and materials covers the trade-off in detail, and how long an MVP takes gives realistic timelines to check a quote against.
Why RAITHub for an Australian build?
- Fixed written quotes in your terms. A free 15-minute technical audit, then a fixed-scope quote with its assumptions listed, so the line items above can be checked one by one. See pricing and engagement models.
- QA is a line, not an afterthought. Every build ships with an automated test suite gated in CI. PropDesk, the property management platform RAITHub built, runs 1,024 automated tests and collects rent through Stripe.
- Proof you can read before a call. BlockEstate, a multi-tenant listing and inquiry platform, reached its MVP in 6 weeks; Sundor Skin runs 146 PostgreSQL tables with row-level security and 530+ tests.
- An overlap that works. 4 to 7 shared hours with Australian cities every working day, in the Australian afternoon, plus written daily handoffs.
- You own it. Full IP assignment and a standard NDA. First releases run under MVP development.
When you don't need us
- You need a native iOS or Android app. RAITHub does not build native mobile apps.
- An off-the-shelf tool does 80% of the job. A subscription you can cancel beats a build you must maintain. Try it for a quarter first.
- You want a developer placed in your team. RAITHub does not offer staff augmentation; hire directly instead.
- You need someone on site in Australia, or a vendor certified to SOC 2 or ISO 27001. RAITHub has no Australian office and holds neither certification.
- Your budget is under about A$10,000 for a full product. Validate with a no-code prototype first and build once people pay for it.

Frequently asked questions
How much does app development cost in Australia?
For a first release of a custom web app, roughly A$94,000 to A$230,000 from an onshore agency and A$24,000 to A$76,000 from an offshore agency in Bangladesh. These ranges come from 660 to 1,080 illustrative build hours multiplied by Clutch's published hourly bands. Native mobile apps cost more.
What is the hourly rate for app developers in Australia?
Clutch lists US$100 to US$149 an hour as the typical agency rate in Australia, about A$143 to A$213 at the RBA's 29 September 2026 rate. Arc puts senior freelancers in Australia and New Zealand at US$80 to US$125, about A$114 to A$179.
Is it cheaper to build an app offshore from Australia?
On rates, yes: most Bangladesh agencies on Clutch list under US$25 or US$25 to US$49 an hour, against US$100 to US$149 onshore. The total saving depends on how many hours the vendor needs and how much rework follows, so compare fixed quotes with the QA line visible.
Does RAITHub build mobile apps?
No. RAITHub builds web applications that work in phone and desktop browsers from one codebase. If you need native iOS or Android apps in the App Store, hire a mobile specialist for that part.
Can RAITHub integrate PayTo or BPAY?
RAITHub has shipped Stripe rent collection in PropDesk, but has not yet shipped PayTo, BPAY or NPP integrations. It scopes them as separate line items with their own tests and reconciliation, and says so in the quote.
How many hours overlap between Sydney and Dhaka?
About 5 working hours during Australian Eastern Standard Time and 4 during daylight saving, with both sides on a 9:00 to 18:00 day. Perth shares about 7 hours and Brisbane about 5 all year.
Who owns the code if an offshore agency builds my app?
Whoever the contract says. Insist on a written IP assignment to your company, the repository in your own account, and an NDA. RAITHub assigns full IP to the client as standard.
