B2B Tiered Pricing and Net Terms Without Shopify Plus

Yes, you can run B2B tiered pricing and net terms on Shopify's Basic, Grow and Advanced plans: B2B is on every plan, with up to 3 active catalogs, up to 10 quantity price breaks per product, and net 7 to net 90 payment terms. Plus adds unlimited catalogs, catalogs assigned directly to one company, deposits and partial payments. Credit limits that block orders need something beyond either.

This guide is for wholesalers deciding whether they need Shopify Plus, from $2,300 a month, or whether a lower plan will do. It covers Shopify's own B2B limits by plan, how to design tiers inside three catalogs, what net terms do and do not do, and the point where a custom portal makes more sense. For the architecture of a custom B2B platform, see B2B ecommerce platform development; for Shopify against custom in general, see Shopify vs custom ecommerce. Shopify facts below were checked on 29 September 2026.

Which Shopify B2B features work without Plus?

Most of them. Shopify's plan page says "you can use Shopify B2B on the Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Shopify Plus plans", and splits the features like this (Shopify: B2B features by plan):

FeatureBasic and GrowAdvancedPlus
Companies, company locations, location-level permissionsYesYesYes

Net terms, vaulted credit cards, PO numbers, draft order to invoiceYesYesYes
Quick order list, trade theme, Shopify FlowYesYesYes

Contextual checkout and storefrontNoYesYes

Deposits, partial payments, payment requests per fulfilmentNoNoYes

The practical reading: below Plus, you get the B2B mechanics but a limited number of price lists, and those lists attach through B2B markets rather than to a single company. Shopify's catalog guide says Plus offers "unlimited number of catalogs and direct assignment to companies and locations" (Shopify: B2B catalogs).

How do you build tiered pricing with only 3 catalogs?

Make each catalog a tier, not a customer, and put volume discounts inside the tiers with quantity price breaks. Three tiers with breaks inside them express a lot of wholesale pricing.

Catalog (tier)Who is in itPricing inside it (example)
TradeSmall shops, salons, new accountsBase trade price, breaks at 12 and 48 units
WholesaleEstablished retailersLower base price, breaks at 24 and 96 units
DistributorHigh-volume resellersLowest base price, case-only quantity rules

The tier names and break points are illustrative. Four Shopify rules shape the design (Shopify: volume pricing and quantity rules):

  • Up to 10 price breaks per product. Enough for most tiered volume pricing.
  • Breaks and rules apply per variant. A buyer cannot mix two shades to reach a 24-unit break; each variant must meet it on its own. If your buyers expect mixed-case discounts, test this first.
  • Volume pricing fixes the price. Once a product has volume pricing, "any overall adjustment discount set on the catalog won't apply." Decide per product whether the catalog's percentage or its price breaks set the price.
  • Overlaps resolve to the lowest price. If a company gets more than one catalog, "the lowest price displays to the customer" (Shopify: B2B catalogs). Useful for promotions; dangerous if a buyer lands in the wrong one.

What three catalogs cannot express is one buyer's negotiated price list. Below Plus, a contract price for a single key account either becomes one of your three tiers, or waits for Plus and its direct company catalogs.

How do net terms work on Shopify without Plus?

Net terms are on every plan and are set per company location. Shopify offers net 7, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90, due on fulfilment, a fixed date, or no terms (Shopify: B2B payment terms).

Two details catch wholesalers out:

  • Collection is manual. Shopify's documentation says "payments aren't automatically captured when the payment terms expire"; you charge the buyer's vaulted card from the admin. Overdue orders are shown as overdue, but chasing them is your finance team's job.
  • Deposits and partial payments need Plus. If you take 30% up front on large orders, that is a Plus feature on Shopify, or an invoice handled outside the store.

Terms say when money is due. They do not say how much a buyer may owe you in total. That is a credit limit, and it is a different rule.

Can Shopify enforce a credit limit on net terms?

Not as a built-in rule. Shopify's payment-terms documentation covers when payment is due, not a maximum a buyer may owe, so a limit has to be enforced somewhere else. Below Plus, there are two realistic ways.

  1. Process. Use Shopify Flow, which is on every plan, to tag large or overdue accounts and alert your credit controller, who reviews orders before fulfilment.
  2. A small service beside Shopify. It listens for new-order webhooks, calculates the buyer's exposure from your accounting data, and puts fulfilment on hold through the Admin API when the order would take the buyer over their limit.

The calculation itself is simple. Exposure is what the buyer already owes plus what they have ordered and not yet paid for. This is engineering guidance, in integer cents:

type Cents = number

interface BuyerCredit {
  limit: Cents
  unpaidInvoices: Cents // invoiced on terms, not yet paid
  openOrders: Cents // ordered, not yet invoiced
}

export function exceedsCreditLimit(buyer: BuyerCredit, newOrder: Cents): boolean {
  const exposure = buyer.unpaidInvoices + buyer.openOrders
  return exposure + newOrder > buyer.limit
}

Both routes act after the order exists. The order is placed, then held. For many wholesalers that is fine. It is not the same as refusing the order at checkout, and if two orders arrive at once, the service must count both, or both slip under the limit.

Is Shopify Plus worth it just for B2B?

Only if the Plus-only features change your revenue by more than about $24,000 a year. That is the gap between Advanced and the Plus starting price on Shopify's published US pricing (Shopify pricing).

Cost lineAdvanced (billed yearly)Plus (from)
Per month$299$2,300
Per year$3,588$27,600
Over 3 years$10,764$82,800
Shopify fee with a third-party payment provider0.6%0.2%
B2B catalogsUp to 3Unlimited, plus direct company catalogs

The fee line matters at volume. At $300,000 a month through a third-party provider, Advanced's 0.6% is $1,800 a month and Plus's 0.2% is $600, which closes about $1,200 of the monthly gap. At lower volumes, the decision rests on features: per-company catalogs, more tiers, deposits and partial payments.

When does a custom wholesale portal make more sense than Plus?

When the rules you need go beyond what Plus adds, not merely beyond the lower plans. Sundor Skin is the worked example: a gated B2B wholesale platform RAITHub built for a skincare importer, live at wholesale.sundorskin.com since September 2026.

  • Tiers and overrides together. Buyers sit on Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum, with per-buyer price overrides for negotiated products. One more tier than the non-Plus catalog limit, and per-buyer prices that Shopify reserves for Plus.
  • Credit enforced at submission. Credit limits, exposure and terms are checked inside the database, in the transaction that creates the order, so two simultaneous orders cannot both squeeze under a limit. A new delivery address waits 24 hours before credit orders can use it.
  • Gated buyers. Nobody sees a wholesale price until staff approve the business and send a single-use invitation.
  • Staff-verified local payments. Buyers submit bKash and Nagad receipts and staff verify them, one of 8 payment methods switched on or off from an admin screen.

The same pattern shows in TheSkinProof, the founder's own marketplace, built and run by RAITHub, which takes bKash, Nagad, SSLCommerz and cash on delivery. In a market where Shopify Payments is not available, local rails and cash on delivery are not a setting you switch on; they are an integration you own.

Why RAITHub for this, and when you don't need us

RAITHub built Sundor Skin's tier pricing, credit control and gated buyer approval end to end: 146 PostgreSQL tables with row-level security, 88 permission codes, 12 staff roles and 530+ automated tests. That is the evidence for how the rules are enforced, not a promise. RAITHub also builds the smaller option: a backend service beside Shopify that holds orders over a credit limit, scoped under API and backend development. Every quote is fixed and written after a free 15-minute technical audit, and you own the code.

You don't need RAITHub if:

  • Three catalogs and net terms cover your pricing. Configure Shopify; you will launch sooner and spend less.
  • You need Plus features only. A Shopify partner agency will set up Plus faster than any custom build.
  • You want someone to run credit control. RAITHub builds and tests software; it does not run your finance function.
  • You need a certified vendor or developers placed in your team. RAITHub is not SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certified and does not offer staff augmentation.

If your pricing or credit rules have outgrown three catalogs, book the free 15-minute technical audit with your tiers, terms and how orders are approved today. The ecommerce page sets out what a build includes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Shopify B2B without Shopify Plus?

Yes. Shopify says B2B is available on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. Lower plans get companies, quantity rules, price breaks, net terms and up to 3 active catalogs; Plus adds unlimited and direct company catalogs, deposits and partial payments.

How many B2B price lists can I have on Shopify Advanced?

Up to 3 active catalogs across all your B2B markets, the same as Basic and Grow. Advanced adds contextual B2B checkout and storefront. Unlimited catalogs, and catalogs assigned directly to a company, need Plus.

Does Shopify offer net 30 terms on lower plans?

Yes. Net 7, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90, due on fulfilment and fixed-date terms are on every plan, set per company location. Shopify does not capture payment automatically when terms expire; you charge the vaulted card yourself.

Can Shopify set a credit limit for a wholesale buyer?

Shopify's payment-terms documentation covers due dates, not a maximum balance. Below Plus, enforce limits with a review process using Shopify Flow, or a small service that holds fulfilment when an order would take a buyer over their limit.

How do quantity price breaks work in Shopify B2B?

You set up to 10 price breaks per product in a catalog. Breaks apply per variant, so buyers cannot combine variants to reach one, and volume pricing overrides the catalog's overall percentage adjustment for that product.

When should a wholesaler build a custom B2B portal instead?

When the rules go beyond Plus: credit that must refuse orders at submission, many tiers with per-buyer overrides, gated approval, staff-verified or local payment methods. Sundor Skin was built custom for those reasons.
