Detox Testing for React Native Apps as a Service

RAITHub ships and tests production software. See QA as a Service or talk to us.

Detox testing as a service gives you a done-for-you end-to-end suite for your React Native app, built with Detox's gray-box synchronisation to cut flakiness, run in CI, and delivered into your repository. RAITHub writes the suite against your key journeys and hands over tests you own. RAITHub tests React Native apps; it does not build them. Scope is quoted after a free 15-minute audit.

If you would rather have it done for you, see how RAITHub would do this below, or go straight to mobile app testing.

What does a Detox test suite cover?

Detox is an open-source, gray-box end-to-end testing framework built for React Native: it runs on the device alongside the app and waits for the app to go idle before acting, which removes most timing-related flakiness (Detox documentation). A service built on it tests the journeys a real user takes. A typical suite covers these.

AreaWhat it testsWhat you receive
Core journeysOnboarding, login, purchase or the main workflow, end to endSpecs named after the journey, run on iOS and Android
SynchronisationWaiting for animations, network and timers to settle before assertingSteady tests that do not need fixed sleeps
Native interactionsTaps, swipes, scrolls, system permission dialogsCoverage of the mobile paths a web test cannot reach
testID-based selectorsElements found by stable testID props, not fragile textTests that survive copy and layout changes
CI buildsBuilding and testing the release app on every changeA failing journey blocks a bad release

This is not a tutorial on writing Detox. To do it yourself, the official docs are the place to start. This page is about buying the outcome. To compare Detox with the other common mobile tools first, read Appium vs Detox vs Maestro.

Why Detox for a React Native app?

Detox is built specifically for React Native and runs gray-box, meaning it has visibility into the app's internals rather than driving it blindly from outside. Its automatic synchronisation waits for the app to be idle, so the suite acts only when the app is ready. That design removes the single biggest source of mobile test flakiness: guessing how long to wait. For a React Native app, that often makes Detox steadier out of the box than a black-box tool.

It is not the only option. Appium is cross-platform and language-agnostic and suits teams testing native apps or mixed stacks; that route is covered in Appium mobile test automation as a service. The honest comparison is in Appium vs Detox vs Maestro.

How does the Detox suite run in CI?

The value of the suite is the gate. A RAITHub engagement follows this shape.

  1. Audit. A short call to learn the app, the journeys that make money or hold data, and your CI provider.
  2. Baseline. The three to seven most important journeys are scripted first, with testID selectors added where elements lack them.
  3. Stability. Tests rely on Detox's synchronisation rather than sleeps, so they wait for the app, not a timer.
  4. CI wiring. The pipeline builds the app and runs the suite on every change, with logs and screenshots saved, and a failing journey blocks the merge.
  5. Handover. You get the tests in your repository, a guide to run and extend them, and a walkthrough.

A minimal, correct Detox test shows the kind of spec that ends up in your repository:

describe('checkout', () => {
  it('completes for a signed-in user', async () => {
    await element(by.id('checkout-button')).tap()
    await expect(element(by.id('payment-heading'))).toBeVisible()
  })
})

RAITHub tests the React Native app your team builds; it does not develop mobile apps, so fixes go back to your developers.

When does Detox fit, and when doesn't it?

Detox fits a React Native app that needs steady end-to-end tests and whose team has no capacity to automate them. Its synchronisation makes it a strong default for React Native specifically.

It does not fit when your app is native iOS or Android rather than React Native, or when you need to test across a very wide device cloud, where Appium's cross-platform reach suits better. It is also not for you when your developers already keep a healthy Detox suite and only need somewhere to run it. If your product is web rather than mobile, browser-based test automation fits better. And RAITHub is not the partner when you need the app itself built: RAITHub tests React Native apps but does not develop them. For a mobile suite kept current alongside manual, security and accessibility testing, that is QA as a service.

How RAITHub would do this

  • Scope: name the three to seven journeys that make money or hold data; confirm testID coverage and the platforms to target.
  • Build: script those journeys with Detox's synchronisation and testID selectors, so the suite is steady rather than flaky.
  • Gate: the CI pipeline builds the app and runs the suite on every change, with logs and screenshots saved, and a failure blocking the merge.
  • Handover: tests and pipeline configuration in your repository, a short guide, full IP assigned to you and a standard NDA.

Timeline: a first gated set of core journeys lands inside a fixed-scope engagement, with coverage widened on a monthly plan after that. You receive: the tests, CI configuration, a handover document, full IP and an NDA. Proof: RAITHub's test discipline is counted in real repositories, from 400+ tests on this website to 1,024 on PropDesk. There is no mobile QA case study yet, so judge the service on the free audit. Next step: tell RAITHub about your React Native app, then get a written fixed quote. No rates are published.

Frequently asked questions

Why use Detox instead of a cross-platform tool?

Detox is built for React Native and runs gray-box with automatic synchronisation, so it waits for the app to be idle before acting. For a React Native app that often makes it steadier than a black-box tool, with less timing code to maintain.

Does Detox test both iOS and Android?

Yes. Detox runs the same suite on both iOS and Android for a React Native app, with platform-specific handling only where the app genuinely differs.

Do you build the React Native app as well?

No. RAITHub tests React Native apps but does not develop them. Bugs are reported with steps and, where the cause is clear, the likely fix, and your own developers make the change.

What if my app has no testIDs yet?

Detox finds elements by stable testID props. Where they are missing, RAITHub adds them as part of scoping the suite, so selectors survive copy and layout changes.

Will the Detox tests live in my repository?

Yes. The tests and the CI configuration are committed to your repository, and the IP is assigned to you, so the suite keeps protecting you after the engagement ends.

Is this staff augmentation?

No. RAITHub delivers the suite as a managed service with owned deliverables, not testers placed under your management. Staff augmentation is a different model RAITHub does not offer.
